How to change the change the ink cartridges in a HP Photosmart printer:
Before you start you will need to have purchased ink cartridges that are compatible with this model of printer by using our online cartridge finder (link to the relevant pages)
- Firstly, you will need to ensure that your printer is turned on before you proceed any further
- Next, open the top of the printer and lock it into its open position, or on some models, the printer cartridges are accessed by opening the front of the printer.
- The printer carriage should automatically move to the centre of the machine and become still.
- There should be a tab on the front of the cartridge (facing you), gently press it and release the cartridge by pulling it upwards. Alternatively on some printers, in order to remove the cartridge you push down to release it. You are then able to remove the empty cartridge.
- Next, remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging.
- You then need to remove the plastic wrapping by pulling on the orange tab.
- You will see an orange cap on the cartridge; twist it counter clockwise until it snaps off.
- Slide the cartridge into the slot with the contacts facing towards the print-head.
- Press the cartridge into the slot, you should hear it click into place. Make sure to insert the colour cartridge into the indicated colour cartridge slot, and the black cartridge into the black ink cartridge slot.
- Close the top of the printer or the front door of the printer.
And voila! Your HP Photosmart printer should now be ready to print off all those wonderful holiday snaps. If you should find that the printing quality is not as high as it was previously, the main reason for this is likely to be the print heads needing a clean. This can be done through the menu system on the printer.
